Federer gana su cuarto torneo de Masters

El suizo Roger Federer comenzó el torneo de una manera muy atípica: perdiendo. Mucha gente hasta se dio el lujo de decir que Federer estaba perdiendo la magia debido a que la derrota que consiguió frente al chileno Fernando Gonzáles era su novena derrota en el año. Pero luego del partido con Andy Roddick, el Federer que todos conocemos volvió a las canchas y no dejó de ganar hasta obtener el título. Pasó por encima en el camino a Rafael Nadal, su eterno Némesis, de una manera que hasta sorprendió por lo fácil que le resultó (pese a que Federer dijo que siempre es un desafío jugar contra el número 2).

Cabe destacar que Federer perdió nueve partidos este año, cinco en el 2006, cuatro en el 2005 y seis en el 2004. Es verdad cuando dicen que Federer esta perdiendo la magia. Los números hablan solos… este año perdió nueve veces. Una locura.

En la final el número uno del mundo se encontró frente a otro español: David Ferrer. El compatriota de Nadal había dejado en el camino a Andy Roddick en un partido increíble, en donde el americano cayó estrepitosamente. Lo más probable es que luego de perder frente a Federer, una vez más, Roddick llegase al partido de la semifinal con un ánimo muy bajo.

Había por el partido gracias a que Ferrer venía invicto hasta ese momento en el torneo y por el resultado obtenido ante Roddick, una gran expectativa. Pero por supuesto no había que olvidar un pequeño detalle. El historial entre ambos jugadores era bastante claro: siete victorias para Federer y ninguna para el español.

En lo que fue su octavo título del año, Roger venció a David Ferrer en un 6-2, 6-3 y 6-2 en un partido en donde Federer mostró una clara superioridad. Con este el suizo consigue su cuarta corona en el Masters de Shangai, aunque no consecutivo. No hay que olvidar la derrota sufrida frente al argentino David Nalbandian en el año 2005.

Sólo dos jugadores han ganado más veces el Masters: Lendl y Pete Sampras. Nastase lo consiguió cuatro veces. Si Federer sigue este ritmo, romperá otro record más.

Otro record roto por el número uno del mundo es el de dinero conseguido en premios en el año: más de diez millones de dólares: $10,130,620. Otro premio extra que tuvo Roger fue un auto: un Mercedes CLS 500.

Desde el comienzo del partido Federer hizo que Ferrer corriera todo lo que quisiera. A David Ferrer se lo conoce por correr tanto o más que Rafael Nadal. Pero las piernas no fueron suficientes para el español.

Los puntos fuertes en el juego del suizo fueron como siempre su servicio, pero también sus tiros de revés con slice. Roger subió muy seguido a la red ganando casi todos los puntos desde ese lugar.

El partido duró 99 minutos, tiempo oficial. Ambos jugadores cometieron dos doble faltas. Roger conectó 9 aces, mientras que Ferrer sólo uno. Federer salvó los cuatro break points que tuvo que enfrentar y logró quebrar 6 veces de 9 oportunidades que tuvo. Un 69% de efectividad.

Luego del partido el ranking de Ferrar será 5º, mientras que Federer mantendrá por otro año más su trono en el primer puesto.

Federer: "It's been a great season for me. And finishing off the best players in the world in the Masters Cup, it's always a great experience for me. I think it only really is going to start coming down on me like next week, and then especially during holidays".

"It's been in some ways a breakthrough year for me. Especially the way I played in the beginning of the year, not losing a set during the Australian Open, coming here, beating everybody in straight sets after losing against González when people thought, okay, Federer is maybe not playing so well. Beating Nadal for the first time on clay. I've beaten all my closest rivals, Nadal and Djokovic, more times than they've beaten me. It's been one of those years which I'm really, really happy about".

"Maybe I didn't win 10 titles, but it's not necessary to stay No. 1 in the world all the time. If I keep this level of play up, I mean, I'm in a great position for next year as well".

"Obviously this week, every time I came to the net, I felt like I was in a good position, you know, whereas sometimes you come to the net you think like, 'Oh, God, I hope I don't have to play a volley.' I'm actually very happy I could turn it around, because I was playing very passive in Madrid, Basel and Paris. I always knew I had great defensive skills, and I showed that again this week with the great offensive skill. And when both work, it's hard to beat me basically."

Ferrer: "Maybe I play with a little bit nervous, but him do it all, no? Serve, volley, slice. It's very difficult. My game, it's difficult to play with him, no?"

"I'm happy for the week because I am playing a very, very good level, and my first final in the Masters Shanghai. My family, they are here. Very happy for that, no? But now maybe I was a little bit angry because the final I lost. But very happy. Very happy for this week."

Federer obtiene una victoria fácil frente a Nadal

Lugar: Shangai. Torneo: Tennis Masters Cup. Fase: Semifinales.

El número uno contra el número dos. Una historia que suma páginas cada vez que estos dos jugadores se encuentran y escriben más y más líneas conformándose leyendas por si mismos. Bueno… al menos uno. Aunque a Rafael Nadal hay que darle crédito… será siempre recordado… como el jugador que jamás pudo ser número uno.

Y otra página se escribe. En esta semifinal del torneo de maestros de Shangai se repitió la misma semifinal del año pasado, en donde el 1º y 2º del ranking se encontraron cara a cara: Federer y Nadal.

Nadal jugó increíblemente… increíblemente mal. El partido empezó con la energía de siempre cuando estos dos jugadores se encuentran. Pero desde el 4-4 Federer tomó la posta del partido y no la soltó hasta al final, jugando a partir de ese momento de una manera relajada como si fuera un partido de menor jerarquía.

El único momento del primer set en el que Nadal estuvo por encima del suizo al saque fue en un 0-30 que al ibérico le duró poco. El número uno disparó 4 aces consecutivos, ganando automáticamente el game sin transpirar demasiado para recuperar su desventaja. Para Nadal, fue un gran golpe anímico. Luego en la conferencia de prensa, el suizo, haciendo gala de su gran humildad, dijo que no estaba seguro si habían sido cuatro aces seguidos, porque en el último creyó que Nadal había tocado la bola.

El saque fue la gran arma del suizo en este partido. Mantenía al “Rafa” a raya y lograba desbordar para atacar con gran facilidad posteriormente. El porcentaje de primeros servicios fue de 81%, de los cuales ganó un 82% de los puntos ganados.

Cambios de ritmos, distintos golpes y efectos, y un saque que fue una Excalibur, lograron que Federer consiguiera una victoria fácil, en sets corridos.

El resultado final fue 6-4 y 6-1. El partido duró 59 minutos, tiempo oficial. Federer conectó 11 aces y Nadal sólo uno, y una doble falta (que consiguió que lo quebraran).

"I was really pleased with my performance for the last one and a half sets. Before that it was tough. Rafa had a bit of the upper hand," dijo Federer . "But after that, I got in the zone and played incredibly. For me it was a great comeback. I was really pleased with my serving performance today. It was key to beating Rafa tonight.

"For me to beat him on hard court indoors is a great result. And the way I played today, I wish I could play every time like this against him. But it's not that easy.

"I'm happy to have proved myself, yet again. It was similar at the US Open. I was sort of struggling a little bit to get to the last 16 or quarters, and then I beat everybody in straight sets. Davydenko, Roddick and Djokovic. So here a similar thing... I'm exactly where I wanted to be. I got a shot at the title now so it's a great feeling."

Nadal por su parte, dijo: "I play very good match the first set. I have a lot of chances. Love-30, one break point... Later the first opportunity, he make it. Finally the start of the second set, kill me, no? I tried... He play unbelievable in the beginning of the second... Nothing to say. Just congratulate him.

"Today I didn't get the rhythm because the play was very aggressive. Was difficult for me stay in the match. And when I need the rhythm, the rhythm wasn't there because he hit a lot of aces."

Federer pasa a la final para obtener su cuarto título del Tennis Masters Cup, al cual perdió en la final del 2005 frente al argentino Nalbandian, para enfrentarse con otro español: David Ferrer. El nacido en Javea, avanzó hasta la final del torneo luego de quedar invicto en su zona, derrotando entre otros a su compatriota Rafael Nadal, y dejando en el camino al americano Andy Roddick, en la otra semifinal.

La única diferencia que existió entre esta semifinal y la del año pasado fue el festejo de Federer. En el 2006, Federer gritó, sacudió el brazó, dió un golpe al aire... había obtenido una victoria que le había costado mucho esfuerzo. Este año... simplemente saludó contento.

El historial entre ambos jugadores es ahora 8-6 a favor del español… pero la brecha se va achicando.

Nadal cae nuevamente frente a Nalbandian

El argentino David Nalbandian hace temblar a todo el ranking mundial logrando otra victoria contundente frente al número dos del mundo, Rafael Nadal, en la final del Abierto de París.

Lo más sorprendente fue que el argentino no sólo le ganó al español… lo volvió a aplastar, esta vez ganando 6-4 en el primer set y 6-0 en el segundo. Con esto David muestra que, como dijo en una de las tantas entrevistas posteriores a las dos finales que consiguió ganar, puede ganarle a cualquiera.

Para llegar a esta etapa final, David dejó en el camino a Federer, a Ferrer y a Gasquet. Nombres de mucho peso en el circuito, ya que los 4 (incluido Nadal) son jugadores que participaran en el Masters de Shangai. Queriendo decir con esto que Nalbandian venció a cuatro de los ocho mejores jugadores del mundo, para obtener este nuevo título de Master Series.

El primer set parecía mostrar un escenario diferente al visto en Madrid, donde Nadal jugó evidentemente mal. Esta vez, se sabía por la calidad de los partidos que había jugado, que Nadal era el Nadal de siempre. Pero en el 4-4, Nalbandian con una poderosa devolución consiguió el quiebre, que luego con facilidad mantuvo hasta llevarse el set.

En el segundo set… los números hablan por si solos: 6-0. El partido duró en total tan sólo 70 minutos. 5 aces de Nalbandian contra 1 de Nadal, y el español sumó además una doble falta. El argentino quebró 4 veces contra cero por parte del eterno número dos.

Lo que dijeron los jugadores:

David Nalbandian: "Rafa start playing better than in the end. He served very good in the beginning, too. Play more deep and with a lot of intensity, too. So for me was a little tougher. But after I break him, I feel that I was playing better than him. I play more relaxed, start hitting winners almost from everywhere. That makes me confidence. Then everything was just going until the end.

"I never thought that I can win Madrid and Paris like the way I do it. But I feel that I play very good from the last Sunday, not just today. All the week I was playing great, and I don't know why the result was so easy. But I start hitting winners."


Rafael Nadal: "Was very good first set. I play good, but he is with big confidence. The second set I played bad, very bad. But he start playing very good, no? I have my chances a little bit in the first set. Not much, because he's playing with unbelievable confidence.


"So just congratulate him, no? But the match was not similar than Madrid, no? I play much better today. He's one of the best players of the world, but not the best. But I say before, congratulate him because he's playing... I never saw him play like this, so that's it. Just happy with my level. Today I play against one who is playing better than me and than the rest of the players, too."

Gasquet olvidó que vino a jugar al tenis

David Nalbandian, luego de consagrarse campeón en el Masters de Madrid, llega a la final del Masters de París, luego de vencer de una manera contundente al francés Richard Gasquet. Pese a esta derrota, el francés, se transformó en el último clasificado para el Masters de Shangai. David no tiene ya lugar en ese torneo.

El resultado fue 6-4 y 6-2, pero el partido fue un simple trámite para el argentino, que no tuvo ninguna dificultad en vencer al francés, en su propia tierra.

El partido duró solamente una hora con ocho minutos. Nalbandian ni comenzó a sudar, que el partido ya estaba terminado.

Durante el primer set, que duró tan solo 29 minutos, Nalbandian estuvo muy sólido desde el fondo de la cancha, dando golpes fuertes y planos con ángulos increíbles, que dejaban siempre mal parado a Gasquet.

David tuvo su gran ayuda también en su saque y devolución de servicio, que como siempre le dan una ventaja extra sobre cualquier jugador. En este partido especialmente, usó una gran cantidad de drops, en su mayoría bien usados, que dejaban siempre a Gasquet a kilómetros de la pelota.

En el segundo set, Nalbandian ganaba 5-1, y parecía que la historia se cerraría pronto, pero el argentino se relajó y perdió tres games seguidos. Hizo errores tontos con algunos puntos demasiado confiado por lo que había sido hasta el momento el partido. Corrigió su juego y liquidó el partido.

En la final de mañana se enfrentará al español número dos del mundo: Rafael Nadal. El Rafa viene de un gran partido contra el chipriota Baghdatis, que duró dos horas y media. Por lo que Nalbandian lleva la ventaja: va a estar descanzado jugando contra un jugador desgastado.

Lo que dijeron los jugadores:

Gasquet: "I'm very happy today. It was not easy to go into the court. I knew I was qualified. I was very happy. It was a real achievement. I never thought two weeks ago that I could make it for the Masters back in Madrid. Qualifying for the Masters is incredible for me.

"I thought, well, that's the way it is, and now I need to win. But I really believe he was good in winning that match because I was really not as good as Nalbandian. I was a lower level. Although I lost that match, I'm very happy about this week here. It's exceptional for me to go over there. Two, three years ago I was watching that on TV. I was thinking, This is the other end of the world. The Masters is so difficult. Now I am there."

Nalbandian: "I'm feeling very good, playing great. Maybe I thought that I would wake up a little tired today from the match yesterday, but I feel very good from the beginning of the match. But it's tough to say if I'm feeling better than 2005, this match or that match. But I'm feeling great at the moment.I think I play incredible, perfect, almost perfect until the 5-2 in the second set. I would be playing perfect if I finished in that moment. So I think always there is a thing to improve."

Federer muerde el polvo a manos de Nalbandian, otra vez

Es más que obvio que David Nalbandian se encuentra en un gran momento. No sólo consiguió derrotar a los tres mejores jugadores del mundo en el Abierto de Madrid hace menos de dos semanas, sino que mantiene ese nivel y vuelve a demostrarlo al derrotar al número uno del mundo, al suizo Roger Federer, otra vez. El contexto esta vez es el Abierto de París.

Luego de un tropezón, después de haber ganado el Abierto de Madrid, al perder frente a otro suizo del circuito, Wawrinka, Nalbandian retomó su racha ganadora. Al conseguir esta victoria, David se mete en los cuartos de final del Abierto de París, en donde se enfrentará con el español David Ferrer.

El argentino derrotó al suizo en sets corridos por 6-4 y 7-6 en un partido donde sólo se vio una sombra de lo que es Federer.

El primer set de Nalbandian fue impecable, no le dejaba espacios al número uno del mundo, y pese a tener algunas dificultades para cerrar el set, lo consiguió por 6-4. El segundo set estuvo un poco más parejo y el final se disputó en un tie break, que al final el unquillense logró llevarse por 7-3. El tiempo oficial del partido fue de una hora y 41 minutos.

Con esta derrota Federer suma ya ocho derrotas en todo el año: cuatro a manos de dos argentinos, dos frente a Cañas y dos frente a Nalbandian; dos fueron frente a su eterno némesis Rafael Nadal, otra fue frente a un inspirado Novak Djokovic (en Montreal donde venció a los 3 mejores jugadores del mundo), y la última fue frente a un muy afortunado Volandri.

Nalbandian: "I push very hard from the beginning and I was beating him 5 2. I think that was the key. Start very hard and push him so hard. Put against him a lot of pressure on the game from the beginning. I think that was the key."

Después de este partido el historial queda empatado entre el suizo y el argentino en 8 victorias para cada jugador.

Federer consiguió por segundo año consecutivo el título de Basilea (Basel), ciudad de la cual es proveniente, al haberle ganado al finlandés Jarkko Nieminem por 6-3 y 6-4. El torneo se disputó sobre carpeta y repartió 850.250 euros en premios.

Federer vuelve a ganar en su hogar, y repite la historia que comenzó el año pasado cuando derrotó al chileno Fernando González. Dos veces Roger llegó a la final pero perdiendo el título: en el año 2000 perdiendo frente a Enqvist, y en el 2001 perdiendo frente a Tim Herman.

"Es genial volver a ganar en casa", dijo Federer al término del encuentro. "El público me ayudó mucho, sobre todo estando 4-4 en el segundo set cuando quebré el servicio a Jarkko", explicó el número uno del mundo.
De esta manera el suizo consigue su título número 52, y con esto se asegura de mantener su lugar en el número uno por otro año más. Detenta este puesto desde febrero del año 2004. Este fue el séptimo título de Roger Federer en el año, en el cual además de conseguir nuevamente tres Grand Slams, consiguió dos títulos Atp Masters Series.

Federer supo, como siempre, saber cuando golpear y hacerlo bien quebrando cuando era necesario. Apoyado en sus golpes y su servicio, arma habitual del suizo, pudo conseguir una ventaja rápida y marcada por su ritmo en el primer set. En el segundo los problemas aumentaron un poco para el suizo, que al final no tuvo demasiadas complicaciones para cerrar el partido y quedarse con otro título.

Federer conectó 4 aces mientras que Nieminem consiguió sólo la mitad, además de haber hecho una doble falta, cosa que el suizo no hizo en todo el partido. EL partido duró en tiempo oficial 61 minutos.

Con esto el historial entre Roger y Jarkko ha quedado 8-0 a favor del número uno del mundo, siendo el primer partido el jugado en el año 2002 en Moscú. Su último encuentro juntos había sido en Bangkok en septiembre del año 2005.

Federer: "It’s always nice to win at home. Everyone who has achieved that in their life, winning a home title is always something special. Obviously for me it is the only Swiss tournament I play each year. To get the title here is great for the Swiss people and for me. A lot of emotions go through my body when I have the ceremony, as I used to be a ball boy standing in the exact same ceremony. I am very happy with my performance.

"Jarkko has had a great week; he has beaten some great players on the way to get to the final. I have a great record against him, so you always hope it isn’t going to turn against you. I played well and got off to a good start and never looked back after that."

Nieminen: "I had a great feeling going into the match on his home court. I tried too much at the beginning and lost an early break. It was 0-3 in a few matches and it was tough to start the match after that. I managed to come back a little bit in the first set and got better in the second. I found myself more relaxed and tried to play my game. I made many unforced errors and had a tough opponent on the other side. I had some simple shots that I should not have missed in important situations and that cost me the match.

"It has been a good week, with two good comebacks in the first and second rounds that give me a lot of confidence. It is much nicer to finish in Paris and get ready for the next season on a high."
